La carrière exploite les couches de calcaire du Viséen.
Les calcaires exploités ("grande brèche", calcaire de Lives, "petite brèche", calcaire de Neffe) sont extrêmement purs (jusqu'à 99%).
Ils renferment peu de fossiles et de cristallisations remarquables.
La carrière est surtout intéressante pour sa tectonique. On peut en effet y observer une vaste structure synclinale sur le bord Est, avec du Sud au Nord :
pendages des couches de 45° à redressés (90°)
